A 1999 Hermès "Rêves d'Australie", accordion pleated version · Aboriginal iconography on an ivory cream background, 126 cm of pure silk · one of the house's rarest finishes.
The Hermès carré was born in 1937 under the impetus of Robert Dumas — since then, more than 2,000 different patterns have been created, each requiring up to two years of work between design and in-store release. The accordion pleat is a rare and technically demanding variation of the classic carré: the fabric is treated with a permanent pleating process that gives it a volume, movement, and texture impossible to achieve on a flat scarf. These pleated versions are produced in more limited quantities and are particularly sought after by collectors today.
"Rêves d'Australie" follows the Hermès tradition of patterns inspired by world cultures — here, Australian Aboriginal art with its unique pointillist language, concentric circles, totemic animals, and Dreamtime symbols.
